SCP OPENS “BEAUTIFUL STAR”

On Friday evening, December 3, the Sherman Community Players will open their holiday production of a new original musical – BEAUTIFUL STAR: AN APPALACHIAN NATIVITY. The Christmas Story comes to life in a small church in the mountains of North Carolina, as the Reverend Roy Ledbetter and his family and members of his small congregation take audiences on a musical and storytelling journey from the creation of the world to the birth Jesus.

This lovely show is filled with down-home laughter, toe-tapping music and a tug at the heartstrings as it weaves music, humor and wonder together in a festive gathering of family, friends and faith. BEAUTIFUL STAR is written by written by Preston Lane with original music by singer-songwriter Laurelyn Dossett and is a mixture of gospel, bluegrass and mountain music. Well-known area musicians, BENNY VINCENT, MICHAEL WILLIAMS and DONNIE WHITE provide the accompaniment for the show. All three have played in past SCP productions of SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN and ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE.

Heading the cast as Reverend Ledbetter is BRUCE STIDHAM, fresh from his role in SCP’s popular season opener GREATER TUNA. Playing his wife is ALLISON CARDILE, a new face on the Finley stage but a veteran performer in numerous area theatrical productions. Newcomers GRACIE BROWN and BLAKE RICE are Joseph and Mary.

A twenty-member cast takes on numerous roles as they travel through various scenes from the Bible, including The Creation, The Flood, Abraham and Isaac, and of course, The Christmas Story.

BEAUTIFUL STAR opens December 3 and runs through the 19th, with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. The Box Office opens for season member reservations only on Monday and Tuesday, November 29 and 30 at 9 a.m. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. The box office number is 903-892-8818. For early discounted group reservations call Darlene Schweizer at 903-893-7652.
