Character Descriptions:

Eliza Doolittle---a poor, Cockney flower girl from Lisson Grove who works outside Covent Garden. Her potential to become “a lady” becomes the subject of a bet between Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering. Eliza is proud, high spirited, and volatile. The actress playing Eliza will convincingly portray a woman in her 20s. This role requires a strong Soprano soloist who also successfully manages a believable Cockney accent as well as the refined, upper-class London speech (Standard Received English) that Higgins teaches her. The actress winning this role will be a triple threat: acting, singing, and dancing one of the biggest roles in the musical theater canon.

Henry Higgins---upper-class British “professional bachelor”, a world-famous Grammarian and phonetics expert, a teacher, and the author of “Higgins Universal Alphabet”. He is arrogant, impatient, and condescending. The actor playing Higgins will convincingly speak with an upper-class London accent (Standard Received English), and will perform numerous Baritone solos in a “recitivo” style. Higgins’ character age is 40-50.

Colonel Pickering---Higgins’ friend. A retired British officer with colonial experience, he wagers that Higgins cannot turn Eliza into a “lady. Supports Higgins on several musical numbers and has many lengthy spoken scenes. Upper -class British accent (Standard Received English). Baritone. 40-60.

SUPPORTING:

Mrs. Higgins---Henry’s long-suffering mother. 60-70. This role requires a strong, domineering presence and an elegant, upper-class accent (Standard Received English). No solos.

Freddy Eynsford-Hill---Upper-class young man who falls madly in love with Eliza. He has one solo, but it a HUGE Tenor show-stopper. Standard Received English. Character age 25-35.

Alfred P. Doolittle---Eliza’s Cockney father. He is old, but vigorous. A cunning and clever dustman, he has two Baritone musical numbers and must move and dance well. Cockney accent. 50-70.

Mrs. Pearce---Higgins’ housekeeper. She is a frequent presence in his household, offering Mezzo – soprano vocal support and speaking Standard Received English. 40-70.

Professor Zoltan Karpathy---a bearded Hungarian phonetics expert and former student of Higgins. Hungarian accent. 30-50. No solos.

Mrs. Eynsford-Hill---Freddy’s upper-class mother and a friend of Mrs. Higgins. Standard Received English. No solos. 50-70.
